August 25, 1900 – Our thoughts are with the communities in the path of Hurricane Harvey today as South Texas braces for the dangerous storm to make landfall tonight.

Texas is no stranger to devastating hurricanes. Residents of Galveston are being asked to evacuate this morning on what is the 117 year anniversary of the “Great Galveston Hurricane”, the deadliest natural disaster in the history of the United States.

Unlike today, the people of Galveston had little to no warning as the category 4 storm produced sustained winds upwards of 145 mph and a storm surge of over 15 ft.
