With a new Star Wars film only weeks away, we take look back at where it all began – what may now seem like “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” and revisit reactions to the franchise over the years.

The cultural impact of the Star Wars films is evident in the newspaper coverage from 1976 to today. Star Wars quickly became a phenomenon featured in everything from articles and comics to ads for the popular merchandise – not to mention the billions of dollars in box office sales for the films. Excitement reached a fever pitch in 1976 as the release of the first film had kids collecting Star Wars figures and forming fan clubs. Looking back, little more than the price tag on the toys has changes as Star Wars is as popular as ever.

The series has had it’s ups and downs over they years but is showing no signs of slowing down with the 8th film in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi set to premier December 14th.
