Merle Hay

Merle Hay may be known to some in eastern Iowa as a mall or road in the state capital of Des Moines, but to many others the name has much older and more important origins. Merle Hay was a farm boy from Glidden, Iowa who was possibly the first American casualty of World War I.

Monuments dedicated to the memory of Merle Hay can be found in Des Moines as well as Glidden as the state remembers and remains proud of his sacrifice over 100 years after his death.
